Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which started on October 9, 1871.This tragic fire killed about 300 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,000 structures. Sadly, it usually requires a disaster of this level to teach us how to be prepared in the future.

Since the 1970s, some 90,000 lives have been saved based on the advancement of smoke detection, fire sprinklers, fire safety codes and operational excellence with our fire service.
